Hans Wegner’s Chairs: The China Chair

One fascinating item for any Modernist or Mid Century Modern furniture enthusiast, has to be the China Chair, by Hans Wegner. Designed in 1944, Wegner, creator of masterpieces like the Shell Chair, took inspiration of historical portraits of ancient Danish merchants, seated in Chinese chairs from the Ming Dynasty.

The China Chair is the response of Hans Wegner to an ancient craftmanship with deep knowledge of wood, nature, and harmony. With its own passion and flair for sculptural functionalism, Hans Wegner reinvents the Ming chairs with a fresh but respectful approach.

The final design of the China Chair took several years until Wegner felt satisfied, and only one prototype went on manufacture. This prototype was made in 1944, and in 2008 the Hansen house introduced a new black color into the series.
